4 February 2002

AICC CMI

Problems with API Security

Paul Roberts, Question Mark.

Discussed different types of testing. There are ways to compromise high-stakes testing. There are some ways to prevent compromise.

IEEE CMI report

Claude Ostyn, Click2Learn

IEEE LTSC (Learning Technology subcommittee) CMI subcommittee is making progress on making some parts of the AICC CMI Guidelines into standards. One goal to not break existing implementations.

LAN content via web based LMS

Neil Cramer, NWA

Description of how NWA solved problems of delivering heritage courseware with a Web-based LMS. (Learning Management System)

Ian Wright, VEGA

Problem: Delivering CDROM & LAN based courseware with web based LMS.

Issue: AICC role should be to say if you want to do this, this is the best way to do it.

Recommendation:

  1. LAN courseware be accessible from client (not necessarily provided by Web)
  2. Courseware designed for AICC LAN should be able to be launched and communicate with Web LMS’s.

AICC decided to Survey members: Suggested the following subject areas should be considered for coverage in the survey.

  • Do you have LAN-based courses?
  • Do you have Web-based courses?
  • Do you plan to use both simultaneously?
  • Do you want to use a Web-based LMS?
  • What industry are you in: Aviation, Pharmaceutical, Energy, etc?
  • Hours of courseware you need to use over the Web.
  • How many years do you plan to use this courseware?
  • Dollar investment in courseware?
  • Percentage AICC LAN vs AICC Web vs generic land vs generic web.
  • Future development: how much courseware will you acquire in the next 12 months?
  • What type do you plan on acquiring (percent AICC LAN vs AICC Web vs generic LAN vs generic Web)?
  • Does your current LMS/CMI handle Web and LAN?
  • Would you be willing to change LMS to handle Web and LAN?
  • Do you want to run both LAN and Web simultaneously?
  • Dollars you would pay to be able to do this.
  • How many Seats per year? How many users and hours?
  • How many licensed users do you have now?
  • How many Licenses will you need next year?
  • Heritage content you are using and want to continue using.
  • Do you think your training would be more effective if able to use both LAN and Web based?

A team volunteered to refine the list of subjects and make it into a survey.

Independent test lab

Bill McDonald, FSB

Discussed why we do not have API testing. Waiting for ADL to furnish tests including HACP. May re-examine AGRs when we have testing capabilities.

DoD Guidance etc

Mike Andersen, DoD

Dtswg.msiac.dmso.mil/didlinks.htm

This site has a series of military handbooks on contracting/building training. Mike reviewed some favorite content in the handbooks.

5 February 02

Discussion of DjVu product, which may be used to compress scanned documents.

Wanadu: eLearning for the Rest of Us

Bhanu Sharma, Wanadu

Presentation of set of products that can be added to popular tools (Namely PowerPoint) already being used to produce courseware. The add-on tools described, make PowerPoint more powerful and enable its output to run more easily on the Web.

Training Infrastructure Subcommittee

Ian Wright, VEGA, Chairman

E-learning & Mobile Devices

Tom King, Macromedia & David Metcalf, Latitude360

Discussion of tools that can be used to put courseware on palm or PDA devices. Presentation of examples.

6 February 02

Chairman’s Report

Gary Morrison, US Airways

Following dates and locations announced for upcoming meetings:

  • 2002 - 24 June thru 28 June. Vienna, Austria. May have a SCORM day to encourage attendance. AICC has reserved 50 rooms and will have to pay for unfilled rooms – so waiving meeting fee for new attendees who are non-members if they stay at the hotel.
  • 2002 – 16 Sept thru 20 September. Montreal, Canada. Simgraph will host meeting.
  • 2003 – January. Need location and host to volunteer.
  • 2003 – June. Minneapolis, Minnesota. Northwest Airlines will host meeting.
  • 2003 – September. Need location and host to volunteer.

Simulation and Smart Graphics

Gary Morrison/Jack Hyde: Co-chairs.

New Viewpoint for Simulation

Wayne Hostetter, Star Media

Presentation discussed Simulation based training. Raised a number of questions.

In presentation discussion, it was decided that at least two new simulation initiatives could be useful to the industry:

Define desktop simulation.

Define how you can use current LMS standards for collecting simulation performance data.

Simulation Based Training aids

Richard Pappas, Simgraph

Descriptions of Simgraph projects and lessons learned. Demonstration of some Simgraph simulation products.

AGR002 – Platform Recommendations

New Viewpoint for Simulation

Jay Dempsy, Star Media

Discussion of Real-time and event driven simulations.

Simulation

Mike Sharp, Honeywell

Presented terms used in training that are related to simulation, for which we all need a common understanding. The following terms either appeared in Mike’s presentation with proposed definitions, or were added in the discussion.

  • Simulation
  • Stimulation
  • Emulation
  • Fixed-Base Simulator (FBS)
  • Full-Flight Simulator (FFS)
  • Part-task trainer (PTT)
  • Flight Training Device (FTD)
  • Flight Navigation Procedure Trainer (FNPT)
  • Maintenance Training Device (MTD)
  • Re-targeted Simulation
  • Re-hosted Simulation
  • Reverse-Engineered Simulation
  • Modeled Simulation

  • Realtime Simulation
  • Simulation-Based Training
  • Simulation-Based Training Aids
  • Event Driven Simulation
  • Continuous Simulation
  • Simulator Levels
  • Simulation-Based Training Levels
  • Desktop Simulation

Presentation also discussed simulation Training Strategies

In discussion following presentation, it was decided to work on these definitions by using the discussion capabilities of the AICC reflector. Anyone interested in jointing the discussion should send message to Scott Bergstrom or the AICC webmaster requesting an invitation to become a part of the simulation discussion group.

Simulation-Based Courseware

Michele Asmar, CAE

Description of how simulation may be used with CBT.

Discussion followed of how this CBT with simulation may be related to a SCO. General conclusion that though the simulation itself is a resource, when combined with CBT it becomes a SCO.

Component-Based Courseware

Ian Wright, VEGA

Proposal for an approach to get more accomplished in subcommittee.

Smart Graphics

Gary Morrison, Chairman (US Airways)

Definition of a smart graphic. (Accomplished in previous meetings.)

Proposed that additional definitions be developed for graphics terms (including "complex graphic" and "simple graphic"). It was decided to use the same approach as with defining simulation terms. To participate in the discussion of terms and definitions, contact AICC webmaster and request to become a part of the simulation discussion group.
