September 10 CMI Subcommittee (Jack Hyde, chair) Jack Hyde (FlightSafety Boeing) reviewed the results of a survey designed to find out how a "slash and burn" approach to modifying CMI-001 would affect organizations who had implemented the AICC CMI standard. The decision was made to retain CMI-001 in its present form. Independent Test Lab Subcommittee (Bill McDonald, chair) Reporting for Bill McDonald (FlightSaftey Boeing), Anne Montgomery reported certification testing was accelerating. Both labs are processing a continual stream of testing. HACP is very popular with server-based content delivery. Vendors seem to prefer HACP over the JavaScript API. The ADL has not delivered the HACP test yet but they are expected later this year. Expanded HACP and JavaScript API certification testing will not likely start until Q1 2002. Initially, these tests will probably not use SCORM/MXL structures. (presentation slides) Bill recently made a presentation to CompTIA on the differences between SCORM and AICC. His CompTIA presenation slides are available on request. (presentation slides) DELS Subcommittee (Bernard Bouyt, chair) Bernard Bouyt (Airbus) introduced version 6 of white paper, Digital Electronic Library Systems. (ELS-001). He will add additional aviation-related metadata to the document and continue to compare it with IMS metadata. He will continue his review of different types of routers and present the results of that review at the next meeting. (presentation slides) Training Technology Subcommittee (Jean Louis Bravo, Chair) Jean-Louis Bravo (Airbus) described the Airbus position on moving training to the web. The issues that have to be resolved include: rules for courseware development; handling legacy courseware; authoring tools, and the readiness of the airlines. He explored some of the technical issues and presented a possible solution. (presentation slides) He then made a presentation on the compatibility of a proxy model with legacy issues . (presentation slides) TUESDAY September 11 Large Scale Training Solutions, Content Reusability, and Data Interchange David Lloyd (Vega) discussed several case studies in standardization and the use of technology in training. In the first case study, they learned that: e-education demands human tutor support; large scale content required greater audience research and marketing; and e-content does not mean e-accessible. The Open University says that online courses are best delivered to only 20-25 students. He also discussed the development of their LMS, Vega Designer. He concluded with a discussion of iTiS [Integrated Training, Information, and Simulation System]. (presentation slides) Courseware Management and Processes Subcommittee (Yvonne Johnson, chair) Bill Schook (Boeing) presented several ideas on measuring levels of interactivity. What is an interaction? Instructional interaction: an interaction on the screen that provides instructional information and some level of feedback vs a navigational interaction. Bill Shook (Boeing) discussed a new working group, ISD Working Group for Learning Objects. Its mission is to provide a conceptual framework for documenting ISD decisions, factors, philosophy, content structure & organization, relevant to reuse of Learning Objects (LO) and Shareable Content Objects (SCO), and highlight best industry practices related to the aviation industry. Issues include: granulatiry of learning objects;, existing tagging practices, and metadata. He presented an initial definition of a learning object. WEDNESDAY September 12 Administrative Report Scott Bergstrom (AICC) reported that the AICC was in good financial health. Two new advisor memberships had been added: University of Southern California and . Subsequent meetings will be held as follows:
Training Infrastructure (Ian Wright, chair) Ian Wright (Vega) presented a plan for archiving AGRs and other techncial documents. Each document would have three states: draft, current, and archive. These would be identified on the web site. He also discussed a proposal to merge AGR-002 and AGR-004 into a new AGR-002. He then led the group in a review of proposed modifications to AGR-002. The changes will be out for review and then voted on before the next meeting. (presentation slides) Ian Wright (Vega) reviewed the challenges related to no fault failures. He proposed that maintenance training systems get down to pin and wire level, should have fault-configurable LRU replacements, and should support out-of-cockpit teamwork. (presentation slides) Simulation and Smart Graphics Subcommittee (Gary Morrison and Jack Hyde, Co-Chairs) Allen Munro (USC) talked about action-centered learning with smart graphics vis a vis his iRride project. iRides uses an XML-based markup language called Lesson Markup Language (LML). He described the services of their smart graphics. (presentation slides) N. Sridhar (Sankhya Infotech) made a presentation on dynamic content delivery standards. He presented the development activity that they are doing to address issues of localization, customization, and personalization. He described a project to deliver training to a PDA platform. (presentation slides) Reception Hosted by Vega THURSDAY September 13 Simulation and Smart Graphics Subcommittee (Gary Morrison and Jack Hyde, Co-Chairs) Swee Leong (NIST) reported on activities at NIST relating to simulation in learning technology and manufacturing simulation. He showed a sample of XMI message exchanges between different operational and simulation applications. The DOD High Level Architecture (HLA) provides a basis for simulation systems integration. Jack Hyde (FSB) presented a proposed API and data model for simulation-CBT communication. His proposed data model addresses simulations, recordings, snapshots, and displays. He described the parameters associated with each of these aspects of the data model. Ian Wright (Vega) presented a brief look at Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). (presentation slides) Attendee
