MONDAY – September 16

CMI Working Group (Jack Hyde, chair)

Jack Hyde (AICC) led a discussion and review of draft version 4.0 of the CMI Guidelines for Interoperability document.    (presentation slides)

COM Model Working Group (Jean Louis Bravo, Chair)

Ian (Vega) discussed browser issues related to managing file-based courseware using a web CMI.  (presentation slides)

Bruce Denise (Northwest Airlines) and Neil Cramer (Northwest Airlines) talked about UDDI web services.  (presentation slides)

Jean-Louis Bravo (Airbus) made a presentation on .net.

TUESDAY – September 17

Courseware Management and Processes Subcommittee (Yvonne Johnson, chair)

Yvonne Johnson (Boeing) reviewed the updated glossary of terms related to multimedia training.  The membership is invited to review the updated document and comment.  (Download glossary).

Bill Shook (Boeing) presented an overview of re-usable learning objects as related to the ISD process.  He described the various approaches -- Cisco's RLO, RIO, and ADL.  Boeing's taxomony involves assets, information objects, and learning objects.

Steve Smith (Rockwell Collins) described the impact of reusability on the ISD process.

Sanders Slavin (IBM) and Jo Grant (IBM) discussed the relationship between the AICC, SCORM, and IMS simple structuring approaches.  SCORM uses the AICC API and data model, but needs a SOAP successor to the AICC's HACP approach.    (presentation slides)

Bill Shook (Boeing) concluded these presentations by leading a discussion of what the AICC should do regarding reusable learning objects.  It was decided that the next area of focus for the AICC should be on the principles of reusability.

Independent Test Lab Subcommittee (Bill McDonald, chair)

Bill McDonald (FlightSafety Boeing) reviewed the status of the test lab.  He also discussed the status of rewriting the test suite.  (presentation slides)

He also introduced and demonstrated some of the new features of the AICC web site, name the bulletin board system and mailing lists).

DELS Subcommittee (Bernard Bouyt, chair)

Bernard Bouyt (Airbus) introduced several key ideas relating to metadata for aviation training. (presentation slides)

Anne Montgomery (AICC) followed this with strawman recommendations for the use of metadata with learning objects in aviation.  Metadata that is XML-based can provide consistent descriptions of content to facilitate the search and reusability of content.  She also presented a metadata profile for SmartGraphics.  (download strawman recommendations)

WEDNESDAY – September 18 (Airline Day)

SimGraph Overview

Andre Loranger (SimGraph) described SimGraph, its work and ongoing activities in multimedia training. He demonstrated some of the latest simulation-based training they had developed.  (presentation slides)

New Directions in Aviation Maintenance Training Development

Tom Bolton (Bombardier) discussed several new directions in maintenance training.  He talked about such new delivery concepts as blended learning, cognitive learning theory, and situated learning.  He described improved development processes involving shortened ISD processes and enhanced project management.  He talk about using the web, new development tools, content management, and learning objects.  All of these hold great promise for the future development and delivery of aviation maintenance training.  (presentation slides)

Content Development Strategies for Enterprise Learning

Ed Cohen (Plateau Systems) described thinking about learning at the enterprise level.  This type of thinking involves understanding content life-cycles.  Short-term training would have a different approach to development than would long-term training.  He also gave guidelines for developing generic content.  (presentation slides)

Simulation and Courseware

Michele Asmar (CAE) talked about simulation in a PC environment.  The simulation engine of complex systems (e.g., aircraft) can be run on the PC and integrated with the training courseware related to a system.  She demonstrated such software developed by CAE to show what they are doing to integrate full-scale simulations and courseware.

Air Canada's Web-Based A320 Training

Suzanne Larue (Air Canada) and Allan Greene (Aeronett) showed a live online demonstration of their new web-based courseware for A320 training.  It was converted from PowerPoint to a web format. (presentation slides)

Flash and XML Documents for Print and Electronic Mediums

Kris Rockwell (US Airways) described a process for extending reusable objects from CBT to print.  He showed their straightforward approach for doing this using XML. XML works well with Adobe FrameMaker, Flash, and web browsers (although it can have some unpredictable results in browsers but Flash tends to make them behave a bit better).  He showed how they take a simple XML document in FrameMaker and convert it to other sources.  (presentation slides)

Reception Hosted by SimGraph

THURSDAY – September 19

Administrative Report

Scott Bergstrom (AICC) reported that the AICC was in good financial health.  Elections will be held at the next meeting.  The AICC will elect a new chair, secretary/treasurer, and at-large members of the executive committee.  Nominations for the at-large positions can be sent to the Administrator by email.  Nominations for chair and secretary/treasurer are invited based on an organization's membership status in the AICC and in accordance with the bylaws.  BIll McDonald (FlightSafety Boeing) was appointed as the chair of the CMI Subcommittee

Subsequent meetings will be held as follows:

Date Location
Feb 3 - 7, 2003 Miami, FL (hosted by FlightSafety Boeing)
June 22 - 27, 2003 Minneapolis (hosted by Northwest Airlines)
Oct 6-10, 2003 Toulouse (hosted by Airbus)

Simulation and Smart Graphics Subcommittee (Gary Morrison and Jack Hyde, Co-Chairs)

Richard Pappas (SimGraph) talked about their approach to using simulation-based training aids using smart vector graphics.  He encouraged the use of open source methods and vector graphics.  (presentation slides)

David Castillo (Hill-Rom) made a presentation and demonstration related to simlation-based instruction using FlashMX  The web site, flashsim.com has a wealth of information and resources for using FlashMX to build simulation-based instruction.

Simulation and Smart Graphics Subcommittee (Gary Morrison and Jack Hyde, Co-Chairs)

Jack Hyde (AICC) described and presented a draft proposal for guidelines relating to simulation-content communication.  The subcommittee reviewed these proposed guidelines  .(presentation slides)
