AICC Press Release #43

Federal Way, Washington USA and Stuttgart, Germany –

Second Life and Aviation Training Innovations at AICC October Meeting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AICC addresses emerging technologies and advances in learning technology standards for aviation.

Federal Way, Washington, USA and Stuttgart, Germany, USA - At meetings in Stuttgart, Germany, Aeroflot demonstrated innovative use of Second Life to support aviation training. Meeting sessions addressed many emerging technologies for training and advances in learning technology standards as applied to aviation.

Additional presentations by leading researchers and innovative suppliers addressed social learning, international technology standards for training, and solutions for emerging issues facing the aviation community. Aeroflot demonstrated live users of Second Life interacting with each other and natural language processing chat bots to refine radio communications and ICAO English for pilots. Many AICC presentations like this have direct applications in the larger Learning, Education and Training (LET) community.

There is urgency for airlines, like other organizations, to ensure their ability to deliver mission-critical courseware. Content developed in Authorware represents a massive investment for many companies, but this tool has been discontinued. AICC devoted many sessions to Authorware conversion to help with technology and business continuity issues. Developers and vendors shared techniques, processes and tools to assist. Solutions included technology-assisted conversion of legacy content and advanced authoring for further enhancements.

AICC Stuttgart meeting participants included AICC member representatives from ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative of US Government), Aeroflot, Air Berlin, Airbus, Austrian Airlines, Boeing, Eduworks, FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), Finnair, Hybrid Learning Systems, IEEE LTSC, Pelesys, Plateau, UPS and others. This meeting was hosted by the City of Stuttgart at venues including University of Stuttgart Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and Geodesy facilities and STEP (Stuttgart Engineering Park).

The FAA will host AICC meetings in Palm Coast Florida, USA. Anyone interested in aviation training and training technology is welcome to attend or to join the AICC. Meeting fees are waived for members and for airlines sending a representative for the first time.
